“Humanities” is an umbrella term covering subjects like classics, modern languages, literature, geography, history, philosophy, anthropology, law and the performing arts. In a tech-driven world, these disciplines build critical thinking, cultural literacy, social awareness and creative problem-solving — skills employers value and automation cannot replace.
If you’re finding one or more areas challenging, you can engage a qualified tutor (e.g., Geography, History, English/Literature) to clarify concepts, strengthen writing, and raise scores.
Below we list some of the benefits that these tutors offer and how these benefits will have a positive impact on your score.
The first and undeniable advantage of tutoring is that the child gets the tutor’s entire attention; it is not split between the 20 students that are in the same class.
The large class size may not be the problem in Maths, for example, because in Maths everyone has to memorize exactly the same thing. The teacher writes the formula on the board; all of the students copy it exactly the same way and memorize it. There is no room for interpretation.
Humanities subjects are not like that. In literature class, for example, you may read a poem that can be interpreted a dozen different ways depending on who’s reading it.
When there are over 20 students in the class, there is no time to stop and debate different points of view. So if your critical thinking skills are not well developed already, you may get confused.
The same can be said about a topic in history or law. With your tutor, you can have in-depth discussions about the topics that you don’t quite comprehend and discuss different views.
This experience will be extremely valuable when the time comes to write your essay for the test. Showing the person who has to mark your essay that you can think about the topic critically and actually understand different points of view will get you a higher mark.
Every student has different strengths and weaknesses. Suppose you take modern languages, for example—some struggle with pronunciation, others with syntax or grammar.
In the classroom, the teacher addresses dozens of students at the same time, so they don’t have time to focus on the thing that you may be struggling with. The tutor at home, however, can do just that.
You may have trouble with the passive voice in English, memorizing important dates in history, reading maps in geography, etc. Whatever it is, your tutor will notice what your weaknesses are and devote more time to improving them.
Even if the class is not that big and a student has an opportunity to ask their teacher some questions, they may choose not to.
Teenagers are typically cautious not to show their peers that they have not understood something, so to avoid embarrassment in many cases, they just sit quietly.
A private tutor can encourage the student to open up and ask any questions to clear up misunderstandings. This is especially important in humanities, where the correct answer may not be so obvious.
The student will not be afraid of being judged by the tutor, so they will ask questions freely and gain valuable knowledge from the discussions which they can later use to get higher marks at school.
If you have made several mistakes in the test and you don’t understand why, the tutor will be there to help you. Many humanities subjects require you to write various essays.
This is another skill you can practice with your tutor. Not only will they check your spelling and grammar, but they will also help you brainstorm arguments and relevant examples, and teach you how the essay should be structured to get the maximum score.
In many humanities subjects, students need to do different presentations throughout the course. You can practice your presentation skills with your tutor.
This will make you less nervous about your actual in-class presentation and help you organize and communicate your ideas better. In addition, your tutor will ask you relevant questions (as other students often do). This helps you anticipate potential audience questions and prepare coherent answers in advance.
Your tutor may also recommend additional material and have you do sample tests that will improve your weaknesses. Constant practice is the only way to achieve perfection, and your tutor knows which areas need to be worked on.
Humanities subjects are often tricky to master because, in many cases, the topics are open to interpretation. This encourages students to develop their critical thinking skills, which will be invaluable for them in the future.
Working on the topics with the tutor helps students understand them much better, which will ultimately have a positive effect on their scores.
